Who We Are

The Institute for Youth Citizenship (IYC) is a youth incubator that focuses on educating, connecting and enabling young people to build the capacity and systems to start ventures within the social and business realms, and provides opportunities for personal development and civic engagement.

IYC is dedicated and committed to youth leadership. This will enable us to share best practices on approaches  to supporting young people’s leadership, and to increase the number of young people who benefit from these opportunities. Our goal is to empower and inspire young people to act in order to make a positive change.

Why We're Needed

Young people in Ontario today are growing up with ambitious, expectations, ideas and talents that are unprecedented, driven by new technology, higher levels of learning and globalization.

Yet, in many communities, young talent continues to be overlooked. Thousands of young people face acute difficulties in making the transition to adulthood. Public perceptions of young people – reinforced by media portrayals – are often negative, and position young people as part of the problem rather than the solution. At worst, they are viewed with fear and suspicion.

These negative perceptions mask the extraordinarily positive work in which young people are engaged – whether in the private or public sphere. Young people are also still denied adequate, meaningful representation in the places where power is exercised, from parliament and local councils, to businesses and voluntary organizations.

Founded and organized by proven and emerging young leaders, The IYC will provide an unparalleled opportunity to address these challenges. The IYC will increase the quantity and reach of opportunities for young people; to build stronger evidence and an understanding of what works, and to create opportunities for young people to influence decisions affecting them.
